The gaiwan is made by a potter base in Jingdezhen, an influential center of pottery in the world. It is applied with a kind of forest green glaze which changes with different colours depending on the temperature in the kiln. The surface is characterised by the interplay between glossy grass green with outstanding cracks and matte dark green with outline of mountain, providing the significantly textural and visual contrast. The gaiwan is stunning at the bottom inside where the glaze pools and turn into dark green with obviously cracks giving appearance of crystal.
The gaiwan holds around 150ml of liquid . As the interior is glazed, all teas are available for brewing in this gaiwan. And the cracks will deepen as this gaiwan is used. For these reasons of cracks, it shall not be washed using detergents, but rather water only.
