The fair cup is made by the studio Mupu which is known for the marine blue glaze (check here to learn about Mupu).
A Fair cup usually plays an important role in gongfu tea (cha) ceremony which is called “Gong Bei” or “Gong Dao Bei” in Mandarin. It is used to share tea with all participants at the same serving generally during process of gongfu tea (cha) ceremony, where the tea is poured from a teapot into a fair up, then from there into several smaller teacups.
The fair cup stands out by the gradation of colours from marine blue to orange, giving significantly visual and textural contrast. It is coated with multiple plant ash blended by the potter himself after being thrown into a shape. The coating is altered and reacts under extremely high-temperature 1320℃ in the kiln, resulting in the aesthetically beautiful surface. The “landscape” over the surface seems to be photographed at the interface of sea and beach, conveying significantly the art of clay without any other artificial painting. With the speckled effect of blue and orange, the interior presents concentric circles manifesting the marks of throwing.
The fair cup holds roughly 220ml liquid with a thin body and rim allowing pleasure to hold and preventing the hand from heat. Being pinched out widely enough, the spout certainly guarantees fast and large pour.
